Educational goals:
The course aims to give the background of monetary economics and international finance needed to understand the current theoretical debates and the current economic policies. It also provides the analytical tools necessary to address some of the issues that emerge as a result of the evolution of the international economic system in the last decades.
Contenuto del corso:
Course contents:
1. The international monetary system: an historical sketch 2. The endogeneity of the money supply 3. The transmission mechanism with the interest rate as a policy variable 4. The "New Consensus" 5. The evolution of monetary policy, with special attention to European Union and US 6. The foreign exchange market. 7. The balance of payments. 8. Balance of payments imbalances: different interpretations 9. Balance of payments crises. 10. From the Great Moderation to the Great Recession 11. The debate on international monetary reform 12. Bernanke's ?Savings Glut' in China 13. Global macroeconomic imbalances and neo-mercantilism 14. The credit counterparts theory of international money 15. 'Optimal Currency Area' theory and its critique 16. Macroeconomic adjustment in a pure credit international monetary system
