Educational goals:
To introduce students to the innovations that have upset the structure of the State, the working order of the government and the relationship between centre and periphery.
Course contents:
The main subject of the course is that of 'subsidiarising': from educational institutions to welfare, health, social services, free time and the economy. Within this context of subsidiaries, the State should create the conditions that would allow individuals and social groups (family, associations, etc.) to act freely and it should not substitute them in the carrying out of their functions. The course aims to provide students with a broad historical framework that will allow them to see recent developments in the light of a long process that, starting from the centralised model produced by the nineteenth-century unification of Italy, has brought Italy to the contemporary complex and contentious affirmation of the principle of autonomy at all levels.
