Educational goals:
To acquire a general picture of the complex history of scientific thought, with special reference to the psychological sciences within this context.
Course contents:
History of modern and contemporary scientific thought. Problems of historical complexity relevant to the modern age. From revelation to reason. The "scientific revolution": birth of the idea of "modern science". The "mechanistic" conception of nature. "Natural" language and mathematical writings. From experience to experiments. Non-commutative algebras and non-Euclidiean geometries: the disappearance of mathematical certainty. Darwin's theory of evolution and scientific psychology. Conflict of diverse concepts of nature. The "revolutions" in 20th-century physics. New mathematics and new logic. The crumbling of presuppositions of "modern science": the complexity sciences and the "new alliance".
