To acquire a general picture of the complex history of scientific thought, with special reference to the psychological sciences within this context.
Course contents:
Ancient and medieval scientific thought up to the threshold of modernity. Problems relating to the question of nature within myth, and the Afro-Asian origins of Classical civilization will be studied in their historical complexity. The mythos/logos relationship and the passage from mythos to science as epistemic. Greek science, mechanical technology and epistemology as "theories of scientific knowledge" in Greek philosophy. The advent of Christianity and the mutation of the concept of science in western civilization. Medieval science, the new epistemology in the philosophy of nature and "revelation". The Renaissance heritage, the "breaking of the circle" and Giordano Bruno's thought.
