Il corso si propone di offrire uno spaccato della letteratura teatrale tedesca e delle teorie sul teatro, nel confronto tra il classicismo settecentesco e l'avanguardia sperimentale del Bauhaus.
The course provides a cross-section of German theatre and theatrical theories through comparing and contrasting eighteenth-century classicism with the experimental avant-garde of the Bauhaus.

"La sozzura e lo splendore dell'anima mia": l'utopia teatrale di Heinrich von Kleist. Voleva essere il più grande drammaturgo tedesco del suo tempo, Heinrich von Kleist, ma alla fine scelse il suicidio. Ebbe comunque il tempo di scandalizzare i suoi contemporanei, indignare Goethe, sconvolgere le regole del teatro per portare sulla scena ciò che della passione e della purezza difficilmente può esser rappresentato.
Il corso analizzerà gli aspetti rivoluzionari della drammaturgia kleistiana rispetto al canone classicista, prendendo in considerazione due testi fra i più inconsueti del teatro, e mostrando come la parola teatrale si affermi nella scrittura narrativa dell'autore, e come il suo "teatro dell'anima" prefiguri le scelte del tearto d'avanguardia, da Craig a Schlemmer.
"Filthiness and the splendour of my soul": Heinrich von Kleist's theatrical utopia. Von Kleist wanted to be the greatest German playwright of all time, but in the end he chose to commit suicide. In the meantime, however, he managed to shock his contemporaries, made Goethe become outraged and turned the rules of theatre upside-down in order to bring to the stage things that cannot easily be portrayed through passion and purity. The course will analyse the most revolutionary aspects of Kleist's work in relation to classical canons, examining two of theatre's most unusual works and demonstrating how theatrical expression shows itself in the writer's prose, as well as how his 'theatre of the soul' anticipated the choices made by avant-garde playwrights, from Craig to Schlemmer.
