Educational goals:
The course is dedicated to the reading and to the interpretation of a novel that has impressively been contributing to the development of the German literature after the fall of the Wall of Berlin by stimulating a wide critical reflection on Germany's relationship with its Nazi past and the Shoah: W.G. Sebald's "Austerlitz". A main goal of the course is to investigate the question of "guilt" in the context of German post-war history of culture by referring to the testimony of the Jewish author Jean Améry, who was the implicit interlocutor of Sebald's reflections on human rights. Students will be confronted with the features of Sebald's narrative technique, that at the wake of Roland Barthes' "Camera lucida" makes use of photography to reach an "uncanny" effect.

Title of the course: In the Labyrinth of History: Austerlitz and the quest for the lost identity. "Austerlitz" (2001) represents the crowning achievement of the German Studies scholar W.G. Sebald, an author recognized both in Europe and the USA as one of the most sensitive literary interpreters of XXth Century's History. Thanks to this novel it is firstly possible to investigate the peculiarity of a narrative plot based on the dimension of "pilgrimage" (both epic, if one remembers Ulysses, and romantic, if one thinks of the 'Wanderung'). Furthermore the novel makes it possible to analyse Sebald's uses of photography meant as a reference to a specific documentation (made of objects, fragments of writings and portraits) that transcends the direct relationship with the text. Particular attention will be dedicated to the main character's narration of the 'self' and his way back into his family past. The second part of the course will focus on the themes of guilt, suffering and resentment faced by Jean Améry in "Jenseits von Schuld und Sühne" (1977). Such topics are debated in the literary work of this Jewish author, who was an active member of Belgian Resistance and was eventually tortured in the fortress of Breendonk; to both these experiences "Austerlitz" makes often reference.
