Prerequisites:
Students must have acquired the necessary first level degree to attend year 1 of the postgraduate course
Educational goals:
Students will be guided to interpret the poems of Gottfried Benn, one of the most interesting poets of XXth Century's Germany, endowed with the double talent of poet and doctor. Students will be also guided to interpret the historical-scientific culture of German postwar period at the wake of Benn's narrative and poetry.
Course contents:
The course is devoted to the topic: "Gottfried Benn and the disillusion of the world: narrative and poetry in the 1950s". By relying on Benn's autobiography, tellingly entitled "Double life", the first part of the course will deal with the author's development that encompasses an early expressionistic phase and eventually turned during Benn's maturity into the more discursive poetry of the "Static poems". The focus of the course will be on Benn's inescapable mix of scientific-anhropological and artistic view of the world.

The texts in German and Italian are supposed to help the students understand Benn's linguistic and structural choices, linking the topics of his poetry to the autobiographical dimension they belong.

On October 11 and 12 the German Studies Department will held the Conference "Der späte Benn: Lyrik und Kritik im Berlin der 50er Jahre" ("The late Benn: Poetry and Critics in Berlin during the 1950s"). The Conference is strictly connected with the topic of the course and students are invited to attend it. ERASMUS students will assess the oral exam and they are allowed to read and preprare all works listed in the bibliography in the original German.
