Il corso è dedicato a uno dei massimi interpreti dell'Illuminismo tedesco, Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (1729-1781), che con "Nathan il Saggio" (1779) interpretò al massimo livello la tolleranza tra le religioni ortodosse: quella cristiana, quella ebraica e quella musulmana, aprendo la strada al dibattito su umanità e ragione. Quest'opera teatrale sarà analizzata alla luce dell'organizzazione della cultura teatrale nel '700 tedesco e dei principi etico-morali che fanno da sfondo all'opera.
The course is dedicated to one of the most important intellectual of German Enlightenment: Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (1729-1781). With his "Nathan the Wise" (1779) this author interpreted the ideal of tolerance among orthodox religions (Christian, Jewish, and Muslim), paving the way for the following debate on humanity and reason. This work will be analysed at the wake of 18th Century's German dramatic culture and its ethical and moral principles.

Titolo del corso: La tolleranza religiosa nell'Illuminismo tedesco. Il "Nathan der Weise" di Lessing. Nel corso vengono affrontati prima di tutto i maggiori dibattiti che riguardano la tolleranza religiosa nel '700 tedesco, inquadrando la particolare esperienza di Lessing, la cui biografia è indagata anche alla luce di altre opere. In seguito si esaminano le teorie sul teatro che Lessing formula nel modo più compiuto nella "Hamburgische Dramaturgie" (1767-1769). Nella seconda metà del corso si affronta direttamente la lettura e il commento dell'opera "Nathan il Saggio".
Title of the Course: Religious Tolerance in German Enlightenment. Lessing's "Nathan der Weise". The course will deal with the most important debates on religious tolerance in 18th Century's Germany by focussing on Lessing's and other authors' life and work. The course will also concentrate on Lessing's theory of drama contained in his Hamburgische Dramaturgie (1767-1769). Nathan the Wise will be read and commented during the lessons.

Lo studente dovrà saper inquadrare l'opera di Lessing nel suo periodo storico-letterario e riferire a proposito dei suoi saggi sul teatro; sostanziale deve essere la conoscenza di "Nathan il Saggio".
Student will be required to both frame Lessing's works in their cultural-historical period and to be familiar with his essays on drama. In this contest, the acquaintance with "Nathan the Wise" is fundamental and students will be asked to know its content and the cultural debates in its background.

I frequentanti e i non frequentanti dovranno adottare le opere di Lessing nelle edizioni indicate nel programma. I non frequentanti devono informarsi su eventuali materiali aggiuntivi, previsti dal corso, nella misura di massimo due articoli.
All students are required to rely on the quoted editions of Lessing's work. Not attending student are kindly requested to contact the Lecturer in order to get integrative references (max. 2 essays). Erasmus students are kindly requested to contact the lecturer.
