Prerequisites:
Students must have taken the German literature exams II A and II B.
Educational goals:
The ability to set the main literary currents of the German classical-romantic period against the background of its times and to interpret the theories and texts of the authors studied during the course.
Course contents:
The subject of the course is a fundamental work of eigtheenth century German literature Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre by Goethe. Starting with a definition of the Bildungsroman and the pedagogical teachings that form the nucleus of Goethe's works, during the course students are invited to consider some basic aspects of German culture of this period: the formation of the character's personality, the experience of the theatre compared with the reception given to Shakespeare's works in Germany, the social relationship between nobility and the middle classes following the troubles of the French Revolution, freemasonry represented by the Society of the Tower. During the course, a study is also made of the nature of the reception of a work in modern criticism, considering theoretical assumptions and practical applications.

Questions regarding the historical-cultural and literary setting of the work with reference to the main currents of the time, extending the analysis to other authors who were Goethe's contemporaries.

Other information:
Prof. Ulrike Zeuch of Georg-August Universität in Göttingen, will be present as Visiting Professor in October and will give a 3-hour course in German as part of the year III activities. Attending Erasmus students or those interested in sitting the exam are asked to contact the lecturer when available for students. Non-attending students are also asked to meet the lecturer when available for students for advice on how to prepare for the exam.
