Obiettivi formativi:
Educational goals:		 Obiettivo formativo della Storia contemporanea è di fornire allo studente le basi essenziali di conoscenza dei principali eventi storici mondiali a partire dall'ultimo trentennio del XIX secolo fino agli anni Settanta del XX secolo. I corsi illustreranno alcuni nodi storici, di cui saranno approfonditi i caratteri ed esaminate le interpretazioni storiografiche. L'obiettivo è di riuscire a far orientare lo studente all'interno dei ?grandi temi? della storia contemporanea, analizzando le continuità e le fratture, la problematica interpretativa, i collegamenti tra i vari aspetti politici, economici, sociali e culturali, nonché le relazioni tra le vicende nazionali ed internazionali
The aim of the course is to provide students with a basic knowledge of modern history from the last thirty years of the 19th century to the 1970s. The course looks at key events, the character and historiographical interpretations of which are examined in further detail. The aim to allow students to orient themselves in relation to the "grand themes" of modern history, analysing moments of continuity and discontinuity, the relationship between various political, economical, social and cultural aspects as well as the relationship between national and international affairs.
Contenuto del corso:
Course contents:		 I 2 moduli di Storia contemporanea 3A e 3B con cui si consiglia l'abbinamento, vertono su temi di carattere generale, attinenti alla storia europea e mondiale del XIX e XX secolo; e su argomenti riguardanti la storia d'Italia, che verranno esaminati in modo più analitico. L'analisi degli eventi sarà accompagnata da una descrizione delle principali linee interpretative. Il corso si concentrerà essenzialmente sugli eventi compresi tra le due guerre mondiali. Il numero delle pagine dei testi di riferimento va considerato indicativo. Verranno affrontati, e approfonditi criticamente: o Il pensiero politico dell'Ottocento. Liberalismo, democrazia, socialismo, idee nazionali e nazionalismo, razzismo. o Il processo di industrializzazione. L'industrializzazione dei principali paesi europei ed extraeuropei. Il differente impatto sulla struttura sociale e politica dei vari paesi. o Espansione coloniale e imperialismo. o Il trauma della prima guerra mondiale. La guerra di trincea, l'economia come strumento e fine della guerra o La mobilitazione industriale nella prima guerra mondiale. Stato e mercato. o Le società europee tra le due guerre. Fascismi e antifascismi. o La rivoluzione russa e la crisi dell'Internazionale socialista o Dalla rivoluzione russa allo stato sovietico o Nazismo, antisemitismo, genocidio. o L'espansione giapponese. La Cina. o La seconda guerra mondiale. Cause, caratteri, conseguenze. o Il processo di decolonizzazione o Welfare state e consumi di massa
The 2 modules of Modern History - 3A and 3B (both of which students are advised to take) - have a general character and focus on themes in European and World History during the 19th and 20th centuries and on arguments relating to the history of ITaly, which will be examined in greater depth. The course focuses mainly on the interwar period. The page numbers in the reference texts should be regarded as being merely indicative. The following subjects will be examined: - Political Thought of the Nineteenth Century: Liberalism, Democracy, Socialism, National Ideals, Nationalism, Racism. - The Process of Industrialisation in the Main European and Non-European Countries: Differing Impacts on the Social and Political Structures of Varios Countries. - Colonial Expansion and Imperialism. - The Trauma of the First World War. The War in the Trenches. The Economy as a Means and an End of War. - Industrial Mobilisation during WW1. State and Market. - European Society between the Wars: Fascism and Anti-Fascism. - The Russian Revolution and the Crises of the International Brigade. - From the Russian Revolution to the Soviet State. - Nazism, Anti-Semitism, Genocide. - Japanese Expansion. China. - World War Two: Causes, Character and Consequences. - The Process of De-colonialisation. - The Welfare State and Mass Consumerism.

 Gli studenti dovranno conoscere la storia contemporanea dal 1870 ad oggi. La valutazione avverrà attraverso alcune domande di storia generale e alcune domande su gli argomenti trattati a lezione e sui testi scelti. Frequenza Gli studenti freqentanti verranno esaminati sui contenuti delle lezioni e su un volume a scelta oltre il manuale. Gli studenti non frequentanti dovranno portare 3 libri di lettura critica, oltre al manuale. Nel caso di frequenza parziale, il programma verrà concordato con il docente alla fine del corso.
Students should have a knowledge of modern history from 1870 to the present. Some questions will be on general history and other questions will be on arguments examined in the lectures and in texts.

["Exam based on" cont.] Attendance. Attending students will be examiend on the contents of the lectures and on one selected volume other than the manual. Non-attending students must prepare three critical studies other than the manual. In the case of partial attendance, the programme will be agreed upon with the lecturer at the end of the course.
