The course aims to provide students with knowledge of the core themes and main actors in the history of education from the modern to the contemporary age.
Course contents:
From the ancient to the modern world; schools and education institutions in the middle ages; Tommaso; the problem of knowledge (Bacon, Scote, Ockham); humanism and the Renaissance: two historiographical categories; individualism and the concept of education: V. da Feltre, G. Guarini, Erasmus, Comenius; the concept of experience and Renaissance science; the Reformation; colleges system and ratio studiorum; classicism and European identity; the Enlightenment; Rousseau; the Jacobites; romanticism and idealism; the myths of progress and education; schools and nationalism; experimenal psychology; Durkheim; school reforms; Gentile and neo-idealism; the new education: Dewey Claparčde Decroly Montessori; Dewey in Italy; Gentilians and Marxists; Catholic education: Gemelli, Casotti, Gentile's critics; personalism
