In God We Trust. Dal "popolo di Dio" delle prime colonie alla divinizzazione dell'individuo nell'Ottocento, dai pastori tormentati a quelli illuminati, il corso intende indagare le origini puritane dell'identità statunitense, osservando la persistenza del tema religioso in alcuni testi contemporanei. Si faranno emergere rapporti e intersezioni tra religione e rappresentazione della natura, dell'identità nazionale, dei soggetti maschili e femminili così come di quelli razziali. Una particolare attenzione sarà riservata al ruolo della religione nelle dinamiche di esclusione-inclusione dei soggetti rispetto alle "comunità immaginate" prese in esame.
From the "God's People" of the early colonies to the deification of the Self in the 19th century, from tormented to enlightened ministers, the course will investigate the Puritan origins of American identity, examining the persistence of religious themes in some contemporary texts. We will focus upon the relationship and intersection between religion and the representation of nature, of national identity, of masculine, feminine, and racial subjects. Special attention will be paid to the role of religion in the dynamics of exclusion-inclusion of subjects within the "imagined communities" that will be studied.
