Educational goals:
The aim is to provide students with a knowledge of the main historical events from the last thirty years of the nineteenth century to the 1970s. The courses look at some of the historical difficulties, the nature of which will be studied in depth as well as the historiographic interpretation given to them. The aim is to guide the student through the important themes of modern history, analysing the continuity and the breakdowns, the problems of interpretation, the connections between the various political, economic, social and cultural aspects as well as the relations between national and international affairs.
Contenuto del corso:
Course contents:
The 2 modules of modern history 1 A and 1 B, which should both be taken, deal with themes of a general nature concerning nineteenth and twentieth-century European and world history. They also look at matters concerning the welfare state from its nineteenth-century origins to the compromises made in the constitutions of the second half of the twentieth century, which will be examined analytically. The analysis of the events will be accompanied by a study of their main lines of interpretation. The number of the pages of the reference texts should be considered as a guideline. Module 1 B will deal with the long process by which the European states during the nineteenth century assume roles of assistance, social protection and then intervene in the economy. The lessons will deal with the following themes: * The dawn of the French revolution: the right to subsistence and the right to insurrection in the Constitution of year II. * The industrial revolution and pauperism: what are they and what was the purpose of the workhouses. * The slow emergence of workers from the masses of the poor and their organisations: benefit societies, cooperatives, associations and trade unions. * The complex relations between the welfare state and the disciplining of the workers: the case of Prussia and its development in the II Reich. * The welfare (public intervention to safeguard well-being) from above and below. Peculiarities of the social compromise in France, Italy and England. The great changes of the first world war and the 1929 crisis. * The case of unemployment prevention and assistance: from pauperism to the poverty of unemployed workers. * The 1929 crisis and the different responses made by governments and political and trade union organisations. * The social compromise ratified by the constitutions drawn up at the end of the second world war. The specific nature of the Labour solution. The preparation for the examination will be based on the study of some of the following texts.
