Educational goals:
Obiettivo formativo della Storia contemporanea è di fornire allo studente le basi essenziali di conoscenza dei principali eventi storici mondiali dall'ultimo trentennio del XIX secolo agli anni Settanta del XX secolo. I corsi illustreranno alcuni nodi storici, di cui saranno approfonditi i caratteri ed esaminate le interpretazioni storiografiche. L'obiettivo è di riuscire a far orientare lo studente all'interno dei grandi temi della storia contemporanea, analizzando le continuità e le fratture, i problemi interpretativi, i collegamenti tra i vari aspetti politici, economici, sociali e culturali, nonché le relazioni tra le vicende nazionali ed internazionali
The aim is to provide students with a knowledge of the main historical events from the last thirty years of the nineteenth century to the 1970s. The courses look at some of the historical difficulties, the nature of which will be studied in depth as well as the historiographic interpretation given to them. The aim is to guide the student through the important themes of modern history, analysing the continuity and the breakdowns, the problems of interpretation, the connections between the various political, economic, social and cultural aspects as well as the relations between national and international affairs.

I 2 moduli di Storia contemporanea 1 A e 1 B con cui si consiglia l'abbinamento, vertono su temi di carattere generale, attinenti alla storia europea e mondiale del XIX e XX secolo; e su argomenti riguardanti la storia dello stato sociale dalle origini ottocentesche ai compromessi compresi nelle costituzioni della II metà del XX secolo, che verranno esaminati in modo più analitico. L'analisi degli eventi sarà accompagnata dallo studio delle loro principali linee interpretative. Il numero delle pagine dei testi di riferimento va considerato indicativo. Nel modulo 1 A verranno affrontati, e approfonditi criticamente: *Il pensiero politico dell'Ottocento: liberalismo; democrazia; socialismo; idee nazionali e nazionalismo; razzismo. *Il processo di industrializzazione. L'industrializzazione dei principali paesi europei ed extraeuropei. Il differente impatto sulla struttura sociale e politica dei vari paesi. * L?spansione coloniale e l? imperialismo. * Il trauma della prima guerra mondiale. La guerra di trincea, l'economia come strumento e fine della guerra. * La mobilitazione industriale nella prima guerra mondiale. Stato e mercato. * Le società europee tra le due guerre. Fascismi e antifascismi. * La rivoluzione russa e la crisi dell'Internazionale socialista * Dalla rivoluzione russa allo stato sovietico * Nazismo, antisemitismo, genocidio. * L'espansione giapponese. L?India. La Cina. * La seconda guerra mondiale. Cause, caratteri, conseguenze. * Il processo di decolonizzazione * La società europea alla fine delle II Guerra mondiale. Welfare state e consumi di massa. La preparazione dell'esame si baserà sullo studio di un manuale; si consiglia quello di Rosario Villari per i licei dal titolo Storia contemporanea, collezione scolastica Laterza, (pagine/pages: 300)
The 2 modules of modern history 1A and 1B which should both be taken, deal with themes of a general nature concerning nineteenth and twentieth-century European and world history. They also look at matters concerning the welfare state from its nineteenth-century origins to the compromises made in the constitutions of the second half of the twentieth century, which will be examined analytically. The analysis of the events will be accompanied by a study of their main lines of interpretation. The number of the pages of the reference texts should be considered as a guideline. In module 1 A, the following subjects will be dealt with and examined critically and in-depth: * Nineteenth-century political thought: liberalism; democracy; socialism; national ideas and nationalism; racism. * The process of industrialisation. The industrialisation of the main European and non-European countries. The different impact on the social and political structure of the various countries. * Colonial expansion and imperialism. * The trauma of the first world war. Trench warfare, the economy as an instrument and the end of the war. *Industrial mobilisation during the first world war. State and market. * European societies between the two wars. Fascism and anti-fascism. * The Russian revolution and the international socialist crisis. *From the Russian revolution to the Soviet state. * Nazism, anti-semitism, genocide. * Japanese expansion. India. China. The second world war. Causes, characteristics, consequences. * The process of decolonisation. * European society at the end of the second world war. Welfare state and mass consumption. Preparation for the examination will be based on the study of a reference book; the book for grammar schools entitled, "Storia contemporanea" by Rosario Villari is recommended in the Laterza scholastic edition (pages: 300).

Attendance: attending students will be examined on the contents of the lectures and on one book chosen by the student as well as the reference text. Non-attending students must study 3 critical texts as well as the reference text. In the case of partial attendance, the programme will be agreed with the lecturer at the end of the course.
